MORE ABOUT LODGES & RESERVES • 4-DAY TREEHOUSE KRUGER SAFARI

Tremisana Lodge

Tremisana Lodge offers budget-friendly accommodation in Big 5 safari country. The lodge is ideally located in the northern region of Mpumalanga; an easy drive from the Kruger National Park, Hoedspruit and the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and Tshukudu Game Reserve.

The private safari lodge is owned by Viva Safaris; a leading tour operator that works in close association with Moafrika Tours. Viva Safaris specialises in overland safari tours to the Kruger National Parks and premier game reserves in the region.

Tremisana Lodge was a founder member of the Balule Game Reserve; the largest and leading lodge in this section of the Greater Kruger National Park. The safari lodge accommodate up to 40 guests in 15 luxury tented chalets and a two-bedroomed guesthouse. Each room is air-conditioned with an en-suite bathroom with a shower.

The most striking feature of Tremisana Game Lodge is its spectacular bushveld garden setting; indigenous South African plants blend in seamlessly among exotic species, which includes striking bougainvillea, cycads and aloes. The lodge and gardens are protected from curious wildlife by an electric fence; but you’ll still see and hear the presence of lions, elephant, buffalo and hyena.

Guests only stay one night at Tremisana Lodge on the 4-day Kruger safari but it’s enough to soak up the soothing effect of the lodge; with romantic walks along softly illuminated pathways and the glorious sounds of birds waking up in the stunning garden setting.

Your stay at Tremisana Lodge is made even more pleasurable by members of staff from the local village who have been with Viva Safaris for more than a decade. Chef Delina Mnisi whips up mouth-watering dishes served with her famous homemade bread and hearty local vegetables and healthy salads.

Marc’s Treehouse Lodge

Marc’s Treehouse Lodge offers rustic but comfortable accommodation in safari tents and authentic African treehouses; designed to get visitors up close to the sights, sounds and scents of the wild African bush. The treehouses at Marc’s Camp are made of wood and reeds with traditional thatch roofing, blending in to the dense riverine vegetation.

Marc’s safari tents and treehouses are equipped with electric fans, mosquito nets and comfortable beds; bed linen, towels and soap are provided. Each treehouse has its own bathroom and a private deck overlooking a waterhole or the Klaserie River or, as the locals call it, Breakfast Dam where animals come early in the morning to drink.

Four treehouse suites have a bathroom on the ground level and the other eight treehouses have an en-suite bathroom. Three units are built around a floodlit waterhole and the other nine treehouses are built along the bank of the Klaserie River, surrounded by lush riverine bushveld and tall, imposing trees. Game viewing at Marc’s Treehouse Lodge is 24/7 with exciting sightings of lion kills on the river bank and the trailing predators and vultures that follow in their wake.

Marc’s Treehouse Lodge is part of the Motlala Game Reserve which boasts 3 of the Big 5 (rhino, buffalo and leopard) and an abundance of antelope and predators. Nights time spent at Marc’s Treehouse Lodge are made special by the calls of its local wild residents; the eerie whoops of hyena; the spine-tingling wail of jackals, the distant roar of lions and the plaintive cry of the thick-tailed bushbaby and the soft ‘whoo-whoo’ of an owl.

Birdlife is prolific at Motlala Game Reserve; expect sightings of the elusive Narina Trogon and purple-crested Touraco, and the cheeky trumpeter hornbill, Natal francolin and Natal robinchat. When you need a break from game viewing and bird watching, enjoy a refreshing swim in the lodge pool.

Balule Big Five Reserve

Balule Big Five Reserve is a 35 000-hectare private safari concession situated adjacent to the Kruger Park, and home to the Big Five and an abundance of wildlife and birds. The reserve falls within the Greater Kruger National Park, and was established in the early 2000s when the game fences between a grouping of farms were dropped and the newly-proclaimed land was integrated into the Kruger National Park.

The beauty of Balule Big Five Reserve is the perennial Olifants River flows through the centre of the reserve for a stretch of about 20 kilometres. This abundant water supply attracts scores of game and prolific birdlife, being a rich eco-zone with lush riverine forests and bushveld.

Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s largest game reserves and one of South Africa’s most popular tourist destinations. Located in the north-eastern region of South Africa in the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, the reserve is 19 485 square kilometres and shares a border with Mozambique to the east and Zimbabwe to the north.

The wild bushveld region was proclaimed a protected wildlife reserve in 1898 and became South Africa’s first national park in 1927. The reserve is named after former president Paul Kruger who foresaw the urgent need to protect South Africa’s wildlife from rampant poaching. The Kruger National Park is rich in history and boasts several impressive archeological sites.

Fences were dropped between the Kruger National Park and its neighbours to create a peace park that links the Kruger National Park with the Gonarezhous National Park in Zimbabwe and the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique. This vast protected wildlife belt is known as the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park.

The Kruger National Park falls within the Kruger-to-Canyon Biosphere; an area designated by UNESCO as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve, awarded for the seamless integration of man and wildlife in a region characterised by rich diversity of flora and fauna.

The Kruger National Park is world-renowned as a Big Five destination (which includes elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard and lion), its abundance of antelope and predators and prolific birdlife. In addition to incredible sightings of wildlife on a guided safari tour, the Kruger National Park is a destination purely for the rich biodiversity, and cultural and archeological heritage.

Blyde River Canyon

The Blyde River Canyon is an impressive natural landmark in South Africa and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mpumalanga Province. It forms the northern part of the Drakensberg escarpment, stretching 25 kilometres in length and 750 metres deep in places. The canyon consists mostly of red sandstone and the sheer cliff faces glow in the evening light.

The Blyderivierpoort Dam lies at an altitude of 665 metres and at the centre of the canyon is the Three Rondavels (South African word for small huts). The Three Rondavels is a grouping of huge, round rocks that look like the traditional homes of the indigenous people of South Africa. Blyde River Canyon is the second largest canyon in Africa and regarded as one of the largest canyons on Earth, and referred to as a ‘green canyon’ as it is carpeted in a blanket of lush subtropical foliage.

The canyon is part of the world-renowned Panorama Route; which takes visitors on a scenic drive through expansive man-made forests and indigenous bush through the historical mining towns of Graskop, Pilgrim’s Rest and Sabie. Popular attractions along the route include God’s Window, the Pinnacle and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
